The Business and Human Rights Resource Center held its annual Mary Robinson Speaker Series on Business and Human Rights, looking at how the landscape of corporate accountability is changing. Video and a transcript of the event are available here.

The Fuller Project and Foreign Policy co-published a report on the exploitation of women workers in public health, who perform critical work to keep communities around the world healthy for little or no wages.

The Freedom Fund and the Human Trafficking Legal Center announced the launch of the Coalition Against Forced Labour in Trade – a global network of civil society organizations working to introduce and enforce import bans against goods made using forced labor.

Centro de los Derechos del Migrante was announced as one of the five recipients of the U.S. Department of Labor's Fostering Access, Rights and Equity (FARE) grants to eliminate gender-based violence and harassment at work.

Corporate Accountability Lab published a new report on the Ivorian and Ghanaian cocoa sectors, "There will be no more cocoa here”: How Companies Are Extracting the West African Cocoa Sector to Death." Read the report here.



WHAT'S HAPPENING AT HU
 

At last month’s UN General Assembly, Humanity United attended Democracy Delivers, a convening hosted by USAID in partnership with The Ford Foundation and The Rockefeller Foundation. More than a dozen philanthropic and private sector partners announced investments totaling more than $255 million to aid citizens in countries experiencing democratic openings. Read USAID’s press release for more information on this initiative.

Humanity United also joined USAID and 14 other foundations in endorsing the Donor Statement on Supporting Locally Led Development, representing a commitment to building a global coalition of funders who are committed to advancing locally led development. 

Ayla Francis, Senior Advisor, Policy & Government Relations and Noah Ponton, Manager, Forced Labor & Human Trafficking co-authored an opinion piece outlining why the U.S. should center democracy on and off stage at the UN General Assembly. The piece was featured in Instick Media’s We Didn’t Start the Fire column in collaboration with Foreign Policy for America’s NextGen network. 

Maria Kisumbi, Director, Policy & Government Relations joined a conversation with Saferworld sharing reflections on the UN’s New Agenda for Peace and the importance of civil society voices and perspectives. Listen to the full episode here.

Humanity United Managing Director, Public Engagement Kehinde Togun was a panelist at the Southern Voices Network for Peacebuilding Annual Conference, hosted by the Wilson Center. You can watch the discussion on democracy, citizen engagement, and state relations in Africa.  

HU attended the recent Global Investigative Journalism Conference in Gothenburg, Sweden, the largest gathering of investigative journalists to date. Humanity United Director, Independent Journalism and Media Liz Baker was featured on a panel discussion on the relationship between journalism funders donors and grantees. 

Humanity United also attended the Copenhagen People Power Conference hosted by ActionAid Denmark. HU’s Dr. Bryan Sims, Director, Peacebuilding, was part of a panel discussion entitled “Onwards: Building People Power!” exploring how to take support for social movements forward and reflect on lessons learned.
