Hi John,

My name is Alex, and I'm the Northeast Region Director at Food & Water Action.

I’ve long been anxious about what the climate crisis means for me and my family. After the birth of our son, James, five years ago, I began to think about how he’d grow up in a world with ever-increasing climate change, and largely that meant worrying about extreme heat, storms, flooding, and rising sea levels.

But something new came on the horizon this summer as we struggled through smoke-filled skies from the wildfires in Canada. For the first time, we heard our son wheeze one evening as he complained about coughing all day at school, and for just a moment, a real sense of panic crept in. Luckily, the air quality improved after just a few days and his coughing and wheezing subsided, but I was left worrying about how much worse our air quality will get — and how soon.

In moments like that, it’s hard not to despair. But when the smoke cleared and James was back to the happy, funny kid he always is, it was all too clear exactly what I’ve been fighting for in all our work to end the era of fossil fuels. The stakes are simply too high to give up.

I’ve been organizing with Food & Water Action and our allies in New York for over a decade, and together we’ve banned fracking statewide, defeated one fracked gas pipeline after another, stopped gas-fired power plants, and banned the use of fossil fuels in all newly constructed buildings.

I’m passionate about these fights because we’re making real progress — when we come together, we’re more powerful than the oil and gas industry. Ordinary New Yorkers, taking time out of their busy lives to make phone calls, show up to rallies, write letters, talk to their friends, and raise their voices is how we’re going to win a more livable future.

We’ve made a lot of progress in New York and across the country, but the truth is, the fight is far from over to ensure my son, and all our children, enjoy a livable future. By building grassroots power, we can take on the corporations that have gotten us into this mess.

Food & Water Action is changing the world by taking on local fights to protect people's food, water, and climate, but we can only do this with your support.
