Then, in his new book, Confronting the Racist Legacy of the American Child Welfare System, professor and activist Alan Dettlaff argues that the US child welfare system is inextricably tied to its racist past, from slavery to the modern day—and must be abolished. Next, as a companion to the article, a conversation with author and professor Alan Dettlaff about his new book, the US child welfare system, and a vision for a system that protects children without breaking apart families. Finally, we revisit the child tax credit, an innovative and incredibly effective policy that lifted about 2.9 million children out of poverty, among other things, and the fallout since it ended.
