John,
It’s been a hard few weeks in Washington. The hypocrisy shown by the Republican Party in the aftermath of Kevin McCarthy losing the speakership is not surprising, but still incredibly disappointing. Instead of taking stock of their party’s dysfunction and extremism, “moderate” Republicans are pointing fingers at Democrats for their own chaos.
Then yesterday, Republicans nominated Steve Scalise — the guy who refers to himself as "David Duke without the baggage” — to be the next speaker. Scalise clearly doesn’t have the support yet in his conference to win a vote on the House floor, because we were called to the floor yesterday, then quickly adjourned.
Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries made it clear that we are absolutely prepared to work with anyone who seeks the speakership who is not in the throes of MAGA extremism. Rep. Scalise voted to overturn the presidential election on January 6th and refused to admit that the election wasn’t stolen for months.
We still don’t have a speaker, John, which means the House is essentially at a standstill. And "David Duke without the baggage” is the GOP’s first choice for the position? Give me a break.
The only sustainable solution to ending this chaos in the people’s house is to ensure that we take back the House of Representatives next year. Will you make a donation of $27 or more to my re-election campaign today?

What keeps me going in these very scary times are my colleagues who, like me, ran towards the fire to rebuild after the insurrection. I’m not at all alone in this work. There are people in Washington who believe in democracy and are fighting to protect it — and there are supporters like you who make this work possible.
I’m incredibly grateful for your support, John.
