Dear Friend,
A few weeks ago, I wrote an op-ed about contraception access and its uncertain future both in Virginia and on the national stage. We continue to see Republicans tiptoe around the issue of codifying contraception access because they know that their continued efforts to interfere with private medical decisions are deeply unpopular.
In the most recent legislative session, I introduced a bill designed to bring equity to contraception access. It was defeated along hyper-partisan lines. In the same session we also saw the introduction of right-wing legislation that would have had devastating consequences on highly effective birth control methods such as IUDs. The reality is that Republican extremists will stop at nothing to regulate individuals’ bodies and private health decisions.

In the first GOP presidential debate, only one candidate mentioned contraception access, and even her own record falls far short of the kind of leadership we need. In Congress, action on the “Right to Contraception Act” has been blocked time and time again, including by our own Virginia Representatives Ben Cline, Bob Good, Morgan Griffith, and Rob Wittman. |
