Early this morning, a 6.3-magnitude aftershock struck Afghanistan, the second quake of that magnitude to hit the country this week. Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) teams were already on the ground, treating patients after the first earthquake struck on Saturday, October 7. Our teams have been supporting Herat Regional Hospital, which received 117 patients this morning alone. We expect more patients to arrive in the coming hours as the epicenter of the second earthquake was in the remote districts outside Herat City.
The earthquakes and aftershocks have reportedly resulted in 2,445 deaths and injured thousands more. Since Saturday, MSF has treated over 540 wounded patients, donated mass casualty kits to treat up to 400 additional wounded people, and stationed a medical team at the regional hospital’s emergency room in case further support is necessary.
After Saturday’s earthquake struck, MSF dispatched a team of operational, medical, and logistical staff to assess the most affected areas outside of Herat, Afghanistan, and to provide medical first aid. Since Saturday, we have set up 10 tents, increasing capacity to triage incoming wounded patients and treat stabilized and post-surgical patients. We will be closely monitoring the situation as it evolves so we can respond to emerging needs.
This disaster, however, is not the only emergency we are responding to.
New challenges arise every day—and not only for the people living in places that make the evening news. Crises don’t happen one at a time and, with your help, we can be prepared to do whatever it takes to save lives whenever and wherever we are needed.
