John, I love this country.

I fought for this country overseas.

And I will continue to fight for this country as Maryland’s Governor.

So I refuse to let MAGA politicians claim the mantle of “patriotism” — not when their extremism hides in plain sight.

I’ll explain exactly what I mean — but first, if you’re with us, I’ve got to ask for your support. We’re redefining patriotism and bringing people together in Maryland, and we need you on our team.

John, I’m talking about MAGA guys like Steve Scalise, who Republicans nominated today to replace Kevin McCarthy as the Speaker of the House. Scalise once described himself as “David Duke without the baggage” — and even attended a white supremacist conference organized by Duke in 2022.

I’m talking about my former opponent for Governor of Maryland — a man who accepted a gift from a Proud Boys member and helped bus insurrectionists to the Capitol on January 6.

I’m talking about all the other MAGA politicians across the country and up and down the ballot who STILL deny the results of the 2020 presidential election.

These folks say that THEY’RE the patriots!

No, John.

We’re not going to let the people who would destroy our freedoms claim they’re the ones defending them.

Here’s how I define patriotism:

Patriotism is the service of the brave men and women in our military, including those I served with in the 82nd Airborne Division.

Patriotism looks like the ministers and schoolteachers and operating engineers, in my family and across Maryland, who helped build this country to what it is today.

And patriotism is the work we’re doing right now, to build a state government that actually works to improve Marylanders’ lives.

So MAGA politicians can wave around a flag all they want. But I will not be lectured about patriotism by insurrectionists, extremists, or anyone who supports white supremacists.
