It's National Coming Out Day, friend!

I am a lesbian. I'm so proud to live every day as my open and authentic self. But like many queer people — and especially queer children of immigrants — my journey to where I am today wasn't always straightforward.

For many years — even after coming to the United States — I pretended to be straight just to fit in.

I finally came out to a few close friends in high school and to my mother when I was 19.

There were fewer resources for queer kids back then, and fewer places to find safety, acceptance, and community. I remember being kicked out of my favorite coffee shop by a police officer, just for holding hands with my girlfriend.

But these experiences made me who I am today. They inspired me to go to law school and dedicate my life to the fight for civil rights. And today, I'm so thankful for my friends, family and community who accept and support me for who I am. [[link removed]]
