News from Every Australian Counts
It has been an intense few weeks for our community as we work our way through the final report of the Royal Commission into the Violence, Abuse, Neglect and Exploitation of People with a Disability. We are thankful for the hundreds of people who came forward to tell their stories. We remember and honour the many people who were failed by the system. We are committed to working together to make sure that this report results in real change and serious action to bring an end to the violence, abuse, neglect and exploitation of people with disabilities.
A strong theme in the final report was that real and enduring change will only come if we commit to ending segregation. When it comes to the NDIS, it means that we must ensure that all participants have the opportunity to live in the community, where we want, with people we choose. This was our vision when we started this campaign but for far too many of us, this has not been the reality. So this will be a major focus of the work of Every Australian Counts into the future.
I recently interviewed Alastair McEwin, Former Commissioner, Disability Royal Commission about what the findings and recommendations of the Royal Commission into Violence, Abuse, Neglect and Exploitation of People with Disability will mean for the disability community. You can check it out here:
