News from  Every Australian Counts

It has been an intense few weeks for our community as we work our way through the final report of the Royal Commission into the Violence, Abuse, Neglect and Exploitation of People with a Disability. We are thankful for the hundreds of people who came forward to tell their stories. We remember and honour the many people who were failed by the system. We are committed to working together to make sure that this report results in real change and serious action to bring an end to the violence, abuse, neglect and exploitation of people with disabilities.

A strong theme in the final report was that real and enduring change will only come if we commit to ending segregation. When it comes to the NDIS, it means that we must ensure that all participants have the opportunity to live in the community, where we want, with people we choose. This was our vision when we started this campaign but for far too many of us, this has not been the reality. So this will be a major focus of the work of Every Australian Counts into the future.

I recently interviewed Alastair McEwin, Former Commissioner, Disability Royal Commission about what the findings and recommendations of the Royal Commission into Violence, Abuse, Neglect and Exploitation of People with Disability will mean for the disability community. You can check it out here:

At the end of this month, the final report of the NDIS Review will be handed to the government and we know that many people in our community are concerned about what this report will recommend. As part of my NDIS podcast Reasonable & Necessary, I will be sitting down this week to interview the co-chairs of the Review to raise the concerns that we have been hearing and to better understand what the Review will be proposing.

Until then, we hope you can grab a cuppa and enjoy the rest of the news below from Every Australian Counts and save the date, Saturday November 11 at 12PM Eastern Time for our online community forum. Look out for registration details in our next newsletter and on our socials. Guests include senior NDIA representatives who will share the latest news on the agencies new IT system and our codesign lead Nick Avery. I hope you can make it!
Kind regards,
Dr George Taleporos

NDIS Review Update

On Wednesday 6th September a NDIS Review community meeting was held in Geelong. Here is a summary of what we heard.

Unhappy with your NDIS plan?

Dr George speaks with Mitchell Skipsey from the Public Interest Advocacy Centre (PIAC) and NDIS participant and activist, Felice Vaiani, about NDIS appeals and what to do when your NDIS plan doesn't meet your needs.

Tell the Commission what you think

The NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission want to hear your thoughts on quality NDIS supports.
