On Monday, along with dozens of AFSCME members, I visited the UAW picket line at the Stellantis Jeep and Chrysler assembly plant in Toledo, Ohio.
Our visit was a powerful show of solidarity. UAW members have been on the picket line around the clock since September 15 and are standing strong. And we’re standing strong with them. They are on a historic strike against all of the Big 3 at the same time, something that’s never been done before in history.
Over the last decade, Ford, General Motors and Stellantis have made more than a quarter of a trillion dollars in profits. CEOs, bosses, and shareholders have gotten richer. But the autoworkers, who took deep cuts to save the industry during the Great Recession, haven’t been made whole.
They aren’t just fighting for fair wages and benefits – they’re fighting for all of us. For working class people who are being left behind while corporate executives make out like bandits.
That’s why AFSCME stands with UAW. We marched with them around the massive Jeep assembly plant in Toledo to show the bosses that UAW has the whole labor movement behind them. That’s why I want you to find a UAW picket line near you and stop by. Wear your AFSCME green. Bring some water, or pizza, or just your solidarity and go walk the picket line.
UAW isn’t alone in this struggle. And it’s not just the labor movement and the American people standing with them. Last week, President Biden showed up to walk the picket line with workers – becoming the first sitting U.S. president ever to do so. President Biden’s commitment to growing and strengthening the middle class is clear.
We’ve all got to support these workers – no matter how long their fight is. Use the link below to find your nearest picket line and make a visit if you can.
