John, EMILYs List began in 1985 with a mission to raise money in support of Democratic pro-choice women running for office. It was (and still is) a pretty simple idea. As it turns out, a lot of revolutions start with pretty simple ideas.
The other EMILYs List foremothers and I founded this organization because the political establishment at the time did not believe women could win elections. This became a self-fulfilling prophecy when they refused to support women candidates. We knew it was time for a change. We were determined to open doors so women had a fair chance to compete — and to win.
Last Tuesday was a very special day for me. I cried tears of joy as I sat in the gallery of the U.S. Senate and watched our very own Laphonza Butler be sworn in by Vice President Kamala Harris. And I reflected on the fact that, back in 1985, I could not possibly have imagined what was in store for the future of this organization, its candidates, and now, its leader.
It is a full-circle moment for EMILYs List that one of our own, our former president, was called upon to serve as a U.S. senator. Laphonza brings to the Senate a career's worth of leadership and expertise, and Gov. Newsom made an extraordinary choice in appointing her to fill the late Sen. Dianne Feinstein's seat.
The bottom line is: Sen. Butler knows exactly what happens when a committed community of activists decides it's time for women to lead. That perspective is invaluable, and is uniquely informed by having been part of the EMILYs List community.
