Happy National Coming Out Day!
Today and every day, I’m proud to celebrate and fight for the LGBTQ+
community and every person’s right to be their authentic selves and openly
love who they love. That includes the right to choose if, when, how, and
to whom they come out.
Though we’ve come a long way since this day was established in 1988, the
struggle for LGBTQ+ rights and liberation persists, especially with the
rise in anti-LGBTQ+ rhetoric and legislation from GOP extremists in states
all over the country.
From attacks on transgender youth’s ability to play on the sports teams
and use the facilities they identify with, to bans on books discussing
LGBTQ+ topics, to the far-right’s ongoing opposition to same-sex marriage,
the fight for LGBTQ+ rights and equity is an ongoing struggle that we
cannot give up on.
California has long led the way in advancing and protecting LGBTQ+ rights,
but we are not immune to attacks on LGBTQ+ individuals’ freedom and
well-being, including conservative school districts’ attempts to ‘out’
trans or gender-non-conforming students against their will — violating
their privacy and dignity, while putting their safety at risk.
As your Attorney General, I recently filed a lawsuit to protect
California’s children and LGBTQ+ students from Chino Valley Unified School
District’s forced outing policy. No person, especially not our vulnerable
children and young people, should be singled out, discriminated against,
or threatened because of who they are or who they love.

We honor each and every person who has made the courageous decision to
come out, as well as those still on their unique paths to self-discovery
and expression.
Together, let’s continue to create a state where everyone can safely come
out and freely live as their true selves.
