The programs are now a political football [link removed] GIVE NOW to Protect Social
Security and Medicare! [link removed] DearJohn,
Your benefits have become a political football! Every time there's a budget debate in Congress, your benefits are used as a bargaining chip. "Let's reduce the annual Social Security Cost-of-Living Adjustment," they say. "Let's hike the Social Security retirement age." "Let's raise older Americans' out-of-pocket health care costs." "Why don't we privatize Social Security and Medicare?" Those are YOUR earned benefits they discuss so casually. That's YOUR life they're talking about. Yet efforts continue to emerge out of Congress and the White House that would jeopardize access to Social Security and Medicare, despite the fact that 10,000 older Americans will turn 65 today and be counting on their benefits to be there for them in retirement.

Bottom line, we can't always expect our lawmakers to do the right thing. Sadly, huge insurance companies, big pharmaceutical corporations and Wall Street brokers have a lot of influence in Washington. That's why the National Committee is working to remind our elected officials who they really work for and that any reductions to beneficiaries' monthly Social Security benefit check would be devastating to the well-being of millions of older Americans.

John, don't take your benefits for granted! I'm not exaggerating when I assure you that they must be protected and defended AROUND THE CLOCK. That's our job here at the National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare. And you — and our million+ members and supporters — are the lifeblood of our grassroots organization. You give us clout in Washington! And right now, with so many contentious issues under debate in Congress, we need to hold our elected officials accountable for any decision that could impact your earned benefits. So please chip in one urgent donation of any amount you can afford now to help bolster our immediate efforts to protect and strengthen Social Security and Medicare!</emm>
