Jack, are you frustrated that you keep stumbling across news stories that are blocked by a paywall? You aren't alone, we all are:

On Friday, in response to the Republican-led chaos in the House, Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries posted an op-ed in the Washington Post providing a solution: bipartisan governance. Unfortunately, this important opinion is locked behind a paywall.
Daily Kos doesn't have a paywall. We rely on small-dollar donations from our readers and activists to cover our operating expenses. Please donate $5 to support our work.

It's no secret that news media outlets have been struggling to stay afloat for decades now. With advertising revenue continually plummeting, many outlets had to make drastic financial cuts and find new sources of revenue. Paywalls and subscriptions to exclusive content, like op-eds, happens to be one of those sources of revenue.
There is a big downside to this: That only those wealthy enough to pay for it have access to the news. This leaves far too many people without meaningful information about their own communities, government, and political leaders. As Rodney Benson, chair of NYU's Department of Media, Culture, and Communication puts it: "Obviously, long-term, this is going to have tremendously negative civic effects… We're already experiencing those effects."
Our democracy depends on an independent press educating and informing voters. Daily Kos is no stranger to financial struggles, but for that very reason, we refuse to make up lost revenue by implementing a paywall. We believe strongly that everyone should have access to the news and our content, regardless of their ability to pay.
Daily Kos is the country's largest independent news and activism hub. With your support, we can continue to make Daily Kos accessible to everyone, regardless of their ability to pay. Please donate $5 or whatever amount is meaningful to you.
