John — This Breast Cancer Awareness Month, it’s critical that we all know the facts:

Fact 1: Breast cancer is the most common cancer worldwide and the most commonly diagnosed cancer among women in the U.S. About 1 in 8 women will develop breast cancer in her lifetime.

Fact 2: In 2023, nearly 300,000 women and 3,000 men will be diagnosed with invasive breast cancer.

Fact 3: There are 4 million women with a history of breast cancer in the U.S. It’s likely that you know at least one person who has been diagnosed with breast cancer.

Fact 4: Black women face a higher risk of mortality from breast cancer compared to women from other racial and ethnic backgrounds.

As a nurse, access to proper and quality health care is at the top of Lauren’s list of priorities. Because the sooner breast cancer is detected, the better chance of survival.

In January 2022, Sandra, a resident of Gurnee, Illinois, encountered issues with her Medicare health care plan, resulting in a loss of coverage during her treatment for stage IV breast cancer. Sandra contacted Lauren’s office for assistance, and they promptly reached out to the Medicare and the Social Security Administration, successfully reinstating Sandra's coverage within a matter of days. Sandra shed tears both from fear and relief.

If we have one message to share with you today, it’s this: As soon as you can, discuss with your provider about your risk of developing breast and other cancers and when you should be screened.

Being a woman and aging are the most common major breast cancer risk factors. It’s crucial that women consult with their doctor to determine their regular mammogram and examination plan. Trans or non-binary people should discuss their personal risk with a doctor and decide how often to be screened.

So please join us this Breast Cancer Awareness Month as we renew our commitment to increase awareness of the risks of breast cancer and encourage timely screenings, leading to earlier detection and more survivors.
