On International Day of the Girl Child, what’s holding girls back?

Dear John,

Did you know that according to UN research, between 40% and 68% of girls with disabilities in the world experience sexual violence before the age of 18? Or that each year, 12 million girls are married before the age of 18? Or that over 200 million women and girls alive today have experienced female genital mutilation (FGM)?

Today is International Day of the Girl Child, and an important reminder of why we are working toward a world in which every girl can live safe, fearless, and free - and can thrive and make a difference.

We are happy to have partnered with Evoca Foundation ([link removed]) this year to create‘Untie the Knot’, a short campaign film produced by Evoca Pictures ([link removed]) . The poignant film highlights the complex and irrefutable connection between the prevalence of child marriage and climate change and calls attention to the importance of a future in which every girl’s right to freedom is upheld.
