Dear John,



Monday evening, I participated in a rally in Montreal to demonstrateourunited support for Israelfollowing an unprecedentedattack by Iran-backed Hamas. It was a barbaric, revolting, multi-prongedterrorassaulttargeting innocent civilians, children, women, and men, using missile strikes and infiltrations of hundreds of terroristsintoIsrael. The latest reports are of at least 1,200 Israelisdeadwith more than 3,000 injured and at least 150 peopleheldhostage in Gaza. 



It is simply unfathomable.



All weekend I was dazed and shocked – almostparalyzed. I reallycould not quitebelieve the news I washearing. Then, as the hoursunfolded and eye-witnessaccountswereshared, familymembers came forward, as Hamas itselfreleasedvideofootage of the carnage and theirdepravity, the reports gotworse and worse.



What happened in Israel is said to be the equivalent of several 9/11 attacks. That’s a scale of death and destruction that’s hard to comprehend. But the magnitude is not the only measure. It is the terrorists’ dehumanization of their victims as they looked them in the eye and murdered, or raped, abducted, and paraded them in cages in Gaza. 



And, of course, another important distinction: after the September 11th attacks, wedidn’tseecelebrations in Canadian streets like thosethis weekend many places in Canada.



The violence infuriates me. It offends and disgusts me. But it also renews my commitment to fight the evil scourge of antisemitism.  



Our hearts break for the lives lost and the families shattered. We will remember them. We will honour them. We will fight for justice for them.



But, make no mistake, while it was the blood of Israelis that was spilled this past weekend, it was all people of goodwill who were the targets and victims of this heinous act perpetrated by Hamas. This was not only an attack on Israel. It was also an attempt to terrorize the entireJewishcommunity. It was part of an orchestratedcampaign to wipe Jews off the map of the Middle East, and itwas an attack on the shared values of Canadians and Israelis.



The despicable and inhumane actions of Iran-backed Hamas and its supporters cannotbetolerated and must becalled out for whatthey are and punished – by the entire world community.



These brutal attacks cannot be justified by ANY provocation, real or imagined. Not by ‘occupation,’ not ‘colonization,’ nor by anyotherwokeliberalconstruct.



Memorials help us heal. Vigils like the one in Montreal and others in Toronto and elsewhere are necessary. Memory must be kept alive. But, to properly honour the victims of this tragedy, we must stand strong.  



Now more than ever we must stand strong and united, in our support for the people of Israel, in Israel’s right to exist, and in the absolutenecessity for it to defenditself, itscitizens, and itsborders.



The words “never again” must have real meaning, and, to borrow a phrase, Never isNow.



Thereis no territorial or cultural warthat can justify the brutalitywe have witnessed. Videos of elderlywomen and childrentakenhostage are sickening. This is not resistance. This isterrorism. The actions of Hamas are soeviltheydefyexplanation or reason. Whatwe all sawwasdevoid of morals or decency.



And, as we watch that horror unfold from afar, glued to our screens and televisions, many of you want to know how you can help. 



It starts with speaking up – makingourvoicesheardwithourgovernments, askingthem to stand shoulder to shoulderwith the people of Israel and demandingthattheyunequivocallydenouncethesehorrificacts and pressure Hamas to release its innocent hostagesimmediately. 



It starts with stepping up. If you have not joined the hundredsnowregistered for Antisemitism: Face It, Fight It in Ottawa on October 16 and 17, pleaseconsidercoming. We can be proud that many of our Canadian leaders and elected representatives have indeed already answered our call to condemn Hamas and stand in solidarity with the victims of their atrocities.  



We can be heartened to see flags at half-mast and the Peace tower illuminated with the Israeli colours. 



Thisis a warstarted by terroristsbent on killing and torturing innocent Israelicivilians and bringing about the destruction of Israel. Theywill not prevail.



We pray for the safety of Israelis and for the lives lost. May the memory of the victims be for a blessing.

Lundi soir, j’ai participé à une manifestation à Montréal pour témoigner de notre solidarité envers Israël à la suite d’une attaque sans précédent lancée par le Hamas avec l’appui de l'Iran. Cet attentat terroriste,vile, abject, barbare et révoltant mené sur plusieurs fronts ciblait des civils, des enfants, des femmes et des hommes israéliens innocents. Les terroristes ont tiré des missiles et se sont infiltrés par centaines en Israël. Du côté israélien, le dernier bilan s’élève à au moins 1200 morts, plus de 3000 blessés et une centaine d’otages détenus à Gaza. 



Ça dépasse tout simplement l’entendement.



Pendant toute la fin de semaine, j’étais en état de choc, presque incapable de bouger. Je n’arrivais pas à croire ce que je voyais aux nouvelles. Puis, alors que les heures passaient et que des témoignages étaient partagés, des membres de ma famille se sont manifestés, et à mesure que le Hamas publiait des vidéos de son carnage et de sa perversité, le bilan s’est alourdi.



On dit que ce qui s’est passé en Israël est l’équivalent de plusieurs attentats du 11 septembre. Le nombre de morts et l’étendue de la destruction dépassent l'entendement. Or, l’ampleur de ce drame va bien plus loin : les terroristes ont déshumanisé leurs victimes en les assassinant froidement ou en les violant, en les kidnappant et en les exhibant dans des cages à Gaza.



Il y a aussi bien sûr une autre distinction à faire : après l’attentat du 11 septembre, il n’y a pas eu de célébrations populaires dans les rues au Canada comme celles qui se sont déroulées à plusieurs endroits au pays pendant la fin de semaine.



La violence m’indigne et me dégoûte. Mais elle renouvelle mon engagement à lutter contre le fléau que constitue  l’antisémitisme.  



Les vies perdues et les familles décimées nous brisent le cœur. Nous ne les oublierons jamais. Nous leur rendrons hommage. Nous nous battrons pour que justice leur soit rendue.  



Mais ne vous y trompez pas : même si le sang versé la fin de semaine dernière était celui d’Israéliens, ce sont toutes les personnes de bonne volonté qui étaient les cibles et les victimes de ces actes haineux commis par le Hamas. Ce n’était pas seulement une attaque contre Israël. C’était aussi une tentative de terroriser toute la communauté juive. Cet assaut faisait partie d’une campagne orchestrée visant à rayer les Juifs de la carte du Moyen-Orient. C’était une attaque contre les valeurs communes des Canadiens et des Israéliens.



Les actes ignobles, dégradants.répugnants et inhumains du Hamas, perpétrés avec l’aval de l’Iran et de ses sympathisants, ne peuvent être tolérés. Ils doivent être dénoncés pour ce qu’ils sont et sanctionnés par l’ensemble de la communauté internationale.



AUCUNE provocation, fondée ou non, ne peut justifier ces attaques brutales – ni l’« occupation », ni la « colonisation », ni tout autre concept woke libéral. 



Les monuments nous aident à guérir. Les veillées comme celles tenues à Montréal, à Toronto, à Ottawa et ailleurs sont nécessaires. Il faut garder vivant et vibrant le souvenir de cette tragédie. Or, pour rendre hommage aux victimes comme il se doit, nous devons rester forts. 



Maintenant plus que jamais, nous devons faire front commun pour soutenir le peuple et la terre d’Israël, et appuyer sans réserve le droit d’Israël d’exister, de se défendre et de protéger ses citoyens et ses frontières.



Les mots « plus jamais » doivent avoir une véritable signification et, selon l’adage: « Plus jamais, c’est maintenant ».



Aucune guerre territoriale ou culturelle ne peut justifier la brutalité que nous avons vue. Les vidéos de personnes âgées, de femmes et d’enfants pris en otage sont répugnantes. Ce n’est pas de la résistance : c’est du terrorisme. Les actes du Hamas sont si cruels qu’ils défient toute explicationrationelle. Ce dont nous avons tous été témoins est dénué de morale et de décence.



Alors que nous assistons à cette horreur de loin, collés à nos écrans et à nos téléviseurs, vous êtes nombreux à vous demander comment vous pouvez aider.



Vous devez d’abord vous exprimer, en faisant entendre votre voix auprès de nos gouvernements et en demandant à ces représentants d’être solidaires du peuple et de la terre d’Israël, de dénoncer sans équivoque ces actes odieux et d’exercer des pressions sur le Hamas pour qu’il libère ses otages innocents immédiatement. 



Vous devez vous impliquer davantage. Si vous n’avez pas emboîté le pas aux centaines de personnes qui se sont inscrites au congrès Antisémitisme : faire face, combattre, qui se tiendra les 16 et 17 octobre prochains, il est encore temps de le faire. La période d’inscription se termine le 12 octobre. Il n’a jamais été aussi important d’apprendre comment affronter et contrer l’antisémitisme. Nous pouvons être fiers que de nombreux dirigeants et élus canadiens aient répondu à notre appel à condamner le Hamas et à être solidaires des victimes des atrocités de ce groupe terroriste.



Il est réconfortant de voir des drapeaux en berne et la tour de la Paix illuminée aux couleurs d'Israël. 



Cette guerre a été lancée par des terroristes déterminés à tuer et à torturer des civils israéliens innocents et à détruire Israël. Ils ne gagneront pas.



Nous prions pour la sécurité des Israéliens et pour les vies perdues. Que soit béni le souvenir des victimes.
