Friend,
In the last 20 years, our nation has experienced a major shift in public support and legal protections related to LGBTQ+ equality. Where coming out as gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgender, even in the 90s and early 2000s, could be career-ending, now more adults than ever previously recorded identify as LGBTQ+.
Out and proud LGBTQ+ Americans serve as elected officials, LGBTQ+ stories are shared in film and television, and this expanded representation has given adults and young people alike a new framework and language to understand themselves.
The ability to come out, to share your true self with your loved ones, should not be a privilege, but unfortunately, it still is. We’ve made progress, but too many people still face discrimination in their homes and from state governments’ policies that prevent them from safely coming out.
Our trans youth are getting the brunt of it.
IN 2023 ALONE,
574 anti-trans bills have been introduced in 49 states
366 are active
125 failed
83 have passed
Republicans across the country have been targeting our transgender community members – working to exclude them from school activities, control their parents’ ability to support their transitions and restrict and remove life-saving medical care.
Every day, I work to protect the rights of transgender adults and children and fight against these brazen attacks. These brave young people, who have taken steps to become their authentic selves, do not deserve this. They deserve love, support, care, and protection.
On this year’s National Coming Out Day, I hope you will join me in coming out against hate. [[link removed]]
Pledge to Come Out Against Hate! [[link removed]]
Take the pledge and learn more about how we can commit to fighting these attacks together.
