Hello John,

There is no time like today to protect and support girls so they can step into their full potential as powerful women tomorrow. Today marks the International Day of the Girl, a day to reflect and raise awareness about the unique issues girls face worldwide.

Equality Now has made incredible strides toward ending harmful practices threatening girls’ safety, right to education, and fundamental freedoms.

For example:
* Washington state passed a law banning FGM following written testimony that Equality Now and our partners delivered to the state’s Senate and House Committees, joining 40 other US states that have laws against FGM.
* Cuba, where nearly a third of girls are married before the age of 18, recently approved a very progressive new family code that eliminates exceptions to the minimum age of marriage – a change that could benefit nearly 290,000 girls in the country who were formerly at risk.

* Since 2008, through our Adolescent Girls’ Legal Defense Fund, Equality Now has taken up nine strategic litigation cases involving various forms of sexual violence, the most common abuse suffered by girls, to set better legal precedents and hold perpetrators accountable in seven countries.

* Earlier this year, we launched AUDRi (the Alliance for Universal Digital Rights) with Women Leading in AI, a first-of-its-kind expert group that is advising at the highest levels on how we can make the digital world a safer place for women and girls by preventing online abuse and sexual exploitation.

But there’s still much more to do.

Together, we can create a world where girls can grow up safe, fearless, and free. By making a gift to Equality Now in recognition of the International Day of the Girl, you can help us advocate for laws that better protect girls’ human rights and ensure those laws are fully enforced.

Thank you,

S. Mona Sinha
Global Executive Director
