A slightly blurred collage of community photos. A march with yellow signs, two people hugging, a meeting, and a person talking on a megaphone are visible. There is a transparent blue overlay and a semi-transparent lighter blue box with the words "Headwaters Foundation for Justice e-newsletter" in black.

Celebrating the Past, Present, and Future of the Fund of the Sacred Circle

The Fund of the Sacred Circle (FSC) was founded in 1999 by American Indian leaders, community members, and partners who sought to push back against the historical trend of disinvestment in Native-led organizations across Minnesota and Wisconsin. Their wisdom and foresight led to the creation of a culturally-responsive fund symbolized by the sacred circle. FSC placed grantmaking and decision-making into the hands of community members built on collective Native values.

Since then, the FSC has remained the longest standing fund of the Headwaters Foundation for Justice and a resource to Native-led organizations..

Over the past year, Headwaters' Program Officer for Native Programs, Wakinyan LaPointe, has carried out an 8-month evaluation focused on the continued growth of the FSC program alongside Dr. Nicole MartinRogers.

On Saturday, September 30, Fund of the Sacred Circle grantees and founders gathered to celebrate the past, present, and future legacy of Fund of the Sacred Circle and hear results of the evaluation. It was an evening of connection, community, and conversation, as attendees connected with one another and grounded in the history of the Fund of the Sacred Circle.

We are excited to share more about this gathering and the evaluation results in the coming months. Keep an eye out as we share more with our community!
Challenging Mainstream Philanthropy with Giving Circles

Mary and Sierra will share their wisdom about relationship-based fundraising and the impact of Headwaters' Giving Project program model. They'll be in conversation with Terri Thao and Friendly Vang-Johnson, who will discuss the Building More Purpose with Philanthropy (BMPP) Giving Circle, a culturally specific group of Asian American families from Minnesota and Wisconsin. We hope you'll join for what is sure to be an insightful conversation!
