Ruff, Jr. 15th District Senate of Virginia  SNAKE OIL SALESMEN   Dear John, For many years, traveling salesmen crisscrossed America selling elixir to cure this ailment or that. Desperate folks with various aches and pains jumped at the chance to spend their hard-earned money based only on what the salesman promised with no proof whatsoever. Whatever was in the elixir was probably something that could ease their pain long enough for him to pack up his wares and move on to the next town. Those days are not over. There have always been and will continue to be those who are selling something that heals only one thing - their wallet. Nowadays, it might not be elixirs, it could be any number of things. Likewise, with the advent of television and the internet they can create desire in any number of ways. PHARMACEUTICALS The snake oil has been replaced with all sorts of drugs approved by the Federal Drug Administration. Each tries to tell you why their product is much better than your doctor proposes. Of course, at a higher price. Other products that are approved by the FDA are sold as supplements. Often, they even brag about the fact that you cannot buy them in stores. Sometimes the reason is that they do not do what they promise or maybe simply to prevent someone from comparative shopping for a better price. POLITICS A few days ago, one Congressman decided to take it upon himself to force a vote for the Speaker of the House. He did it with no thoughts about what and when this should be done. I understand why some were unhappy with Speaker McCarthy but consider the important issues that the public and Congress should be focused on. He did this the same day that Hunter Biden was ordered to court. He did it right when Congress should have been focused on putting together a budget rather than facing another government shutdown. This also is the same time that Congress is trying to subpoena hidden bank records. He did this with no forethought as to what the follow-up step was going to be. He did it, he claimed, because the Speaker made concessions to get some Democrats to vote for something. However, it was him who colluded with the Democrats to oust the Speaker. GREEN POWER For almost twenty years, Al Gore has been circling the globe in his jet telling groups that life as we know it is going to end. First it was ‘global warming,’ then, when true scientists started researching it, he renamed it ‘climate change.’ Each milestone he set has passed and we are still here. Most adults who have looked carefully at the facts understand we are being fed misleading data. Sadly, the ultra rich have donated to universities around the world to propagate this quasi data as fact. In turn, those same colleges influence our young people who are our future teachers, business leaders, and medical professionals.
