Career and Technical Education Month

Last week, the Senate passed my resolution designating February as Career and Technical Education (CTE) Month.

This resolution raises awareness and honors the pivotal role of CTE in addressing the skills gap and providing upward mobility for all Americans. CTE provides Hoosier students with hands-on experience and real-world skills to better prepare them for jobs of the 21st century.

Expanding Coverage for Kidney Transplant Drugs

Receiving a new kidney isn’t the end of the road for transplant recipients. Patients require immunosuppressive drugs to support their new organ, otherwise they end up back in kidney failure and on dialysis. Unfortunately, Medicare coverage for these medications oftentimes runs out.

Last week, I introduced bipartisan legislation to ensure Hoosiers with kidney transplants have extended access to Medicare Part B to cover the costs of these drugs. I have long been focused on improving our organ transplant system, and this commonsense legislation will help save lives and cut down on costly dialysis expenses.

Protect Innocent Children

Pro-life principles are supported by a majority of Americans and I am disappointed that the two bills we voted on last to protect our children were blocked by most Senate Democrats.

Last year in Indiana, more than 2,000 aborted children were discovered in the basement of the late South Bend abortionist Dr. Klopfer. This sickening discovery underscores how important it is for our colleagues to join with us to protect innocent life. We need to come together and pass pro-life bills for the sake of our children.

Electric Works

Friday afternoon, I visited Electric Works in Fort Wayne. Electric Works is redeveloping the former General Electric campus to create a mixed-use district of innovation, energy, and culture, while staying true to the history of the city. Electric Works is emblematic of the type of growth we are seeing in this expanding economy. I applaud the local leaders and visionaries who saw untapped potential and have been working on this for years.

Constituent Spotlight

The O’Brien family spent 20 years trying to get the Bronze Star for World War II veteran Charles O’Brien, who died in 1952. They contacted my office a year ago, and with my staff’s help, on Friday they finally received the decoration he earned.

Charles O’Brien was a part of the Medical Detachment, 133d Infantry, 34th Infantry Division from 1940-1945, which fought in Italy.

Fort Wayne Business and WANE covered this event.
