From the moment they enter the classroom, Maine’s teachers lay the foundation for our children’s success and provide an invaluable, often underappreciated service to our communities.

Our public school teachers do everything they can to empower our children to be the successful leaders of tomorrow. To them, it’s not a job, it’s a vocation. And even though most teachers are paid 20 percent less than other professions, they often spend hundreds or thousands of dollars out-of-pocket for the school supplies our children need.

That’s why Angus recently introduced the Educators Expense Deduction Modernization Act of 2023 — a bill to more than triple the amount educators can deduct from their taxes for out-of-pocket expenses, from notebooks to pencils and more.

The current deduction for teachers is just $300, which is far less than what most teachers report spending out-of-pocket on their classrooms each year. This legislation would increase the deduction to $1,000 and index it to inflation going forward.

This bill would be huge step in recognizing the personal sacrifices educators make to ensure our kids have the tools they need to learn, and it’s not the only way Angus is working to support our teachers.

He also recently introduced legislation to increase access to mental health resources for educators and secured more than $19 million to support early learning programs across Maine.

That’s because, as the son of two public school teachers, Angus recognizes the tremendous contributions of Maine’s educators, and educators across the country, who devote their lives to teaching the next generation.

Angus won’t stop fighting to ensure our teachers get the support they need, but he can’t do it alone. That’s why we’re asking:
