John – the next Speaker of the House will probably be a lot worse on climate than Kevin McCarthy was.
We know what you’re thinking, “How could it get worse?”
Instead of learning from McCarthy’s mistakes by trying to appease his extreme radicals, the candidates for his replacement have even worse climate records than him. Proving once again that the GOP is the party of fossil fools.
One of the candidates, Steve Scalise , has one of the worst environmental records in Congress. Even as late as this summer, he questioned whether humans cause climate change. He’s a friend to oil and gas companies, and he would be a step in the wrong direction on climate.
Another potential candidate for Speaker of the House is Jim Jordan , the Ohio Republican who has aggressively sought to undermine the Paris Climate Agreement. He’s long been an attack dog of the right, and unlikely to ever make common cause with Democrats on climate issues.
Both Scalise and Jordan’s leadership could be disastrous in our fight against climate change and our SEEC Members’ work finding environmental solutions.
