John — firearm deaths of children are spiking, and North Carolina’s kids are even more at risk.
A new report recently showed that North Carolina was in the top five states with the biggest increases in gun-related deaths of children over the last few years.
This is unacceptable, John, and I’ve done everything in my power as governor to avert the crisis. But legislative Republicans in the grips of the gun lobby refuse to come to the table to take real action. In fact, the only action they’ve taken is to go backward by overriding my veto of a bill that eliminates the pistol permit system.
Look, we know what we need to do to curb the epidemic of gun violence. We need to institute reasonable reforms like red flag laws and background checks — but the GOP and their special-interest gun lobby backers won’t have it.
Instead, they choose to ignore the problem and the threat to our kids.
