AUTUMN APPEAL

Dear SPUC supporter,

According to the World Health Organisation, around 73 million abortions occur worldwide every year.

Each abortion brutally ends the life of a unique, innocent and completely defenceless human being while putting at risk the physical and mental well-being of its mother.

Yet successive UK governments have fuelled the destruction of human life on a truly massive scale by routinely funding foreign governments which have forced abortion policies.

Earlier this year, SPUC published an investigative report entitled Complicit: Is the UK contributing to coerced abortion in China?
The report exposes the British Government's long-term involvement in facilitating abortion overseas, including what some commentators describe as an attempted genocide of China’s minority Uyghur population in the Xinjiang region.

The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) has never kept a secret of forcefully controlling its own population, even when that entails smashing its citizens’ fundamental human rights.

(For instance, Quin Zinzhong, a Minister who oversaw China’s birth control policies, once said:

“The size of the family is far too important to be left to the couple. Births are a matter of state planning.”)

Key FACTS about China’s coercive abortion policies

  1. Under the One Child Policy, introduced in 1979, the CCP openly admitted that 336 million abortions and 196 million sterilisations took place
While subsequent two- and three-child policies have been less severe, undercover reporting by the BBC found that China’s many ‘family planning officials’ are still in place and still threatening women with physical force if they refuse abortions.
  1. Uyghur population targeted.
The independent Uyghur Tribunal found that the CCP put in place “a comprehensive system of measures to ‘optimise’ the population in Xinjiang” to reduce the Uyghur birth rate, including mandatory abortion.
  1. The Independent Commission for Aid (ICA) - the watchdog that oversees foreign grants - calculates that UK aid for China totalled around £82 million in 2019.
  1. Further UK grants worth £55.3 million and £23.7 million were awarded to the International Planned Parenthood Federation (the world’s biggest abortion provider) and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA).
Both organisations have been implicated in China’s coercive reproductive policies over the years.
  1. A poll commissioned by SPUC found that almost 2 in 3 people (60%) believe that the UK should cut abortion funding in countries such as China where coercive abortion remains a concern.

SPUC’s China Report receives widespread coverage and support

SPUC’s report is calling for full transparency regarding the true extent of UK aid being sent to China and the cutting off of aid to countries where concerns exist about women being coerced into abortion by the state.

At its launch at Parliament in March, Jacob Rees-Mogg MP welcomed SPUC’s report. He said:

"Letting people know about it [UK aid to China] is tremendously important. How could a penny of our money
be going to a regime that does this?

“That British taxpayers’ money should be used to support one of the most evil, totalitarian regimes in the world, that forces women who want to have children to abort their babies, if you don’t think that is a scandal, then what human rights abuse would you think is a scandal?"

Tim Loughton MP, Chairman of the Conservative Party Human Rights Commission and a member of the Inter-Parliamentary Alliance on China, provided a foreword for the report.
Alithea Williams, SPUC's Public Policy Manager, was interviewed by MP Jacob Rees Moggs on his GB News TV show.
SPUC’s China investigation also received coverage in The Daily Mail, The Express, i News and The Catholic Universe.

The Daily Mail – which has the highest circulation for a daily ‘paid for' newspaper – stated that:
  • In Xinjiang province, the population growth rate of Uyghurs collapsed between 2015 and 2018 by more than 70 per cent and in some areas dropped to zero
  • Coerced or forced abortions were happening on an industrial scale in China
  • In 2020-21, estimates suggest more than £60million of UK aid was given to China
  • On the back of SPUC’s report, Senior Tory MP Tim Loughton had called on the Government to 'end urgently' UK assistance to China.

We simply couldn’t implement campaigns that grab the attention of the mainstream media and the support of Parliamentarians without supporters like you.

But high-level reports require significant investment in terms of staff time and budget.

I’d like to break down the key elements in the Complicit Report so that you can see for yourself what’s involved:
  1. Public Policy Team
It takes people with a great deal of specialist knowledge and with years of experience, hundreds of hours to research and write an investigative report of this type.

As well as SPUC’s internal staff, the services of various consultants are also required.

Estimated Cost: £25,000

  1. Cracking the Media
On the whole, the mainstream media is hostile to the pro-life message. Getting over this barrier and enabling our message to reach the politicians and the public often requires the services of a professional media consultant.

Estimated cost: £22,000

  1. Writing, Design & Printing
First impressions count. This is especially true when dealing with politicians with influence in the parliaments and assemblies at Westminster, Holyrood (Scotland), the Senedd (Wales), and Stormont (Northern Ireland).

Today, there is no more important human rights issue than the right to life. We want politicians to take our message that abortion should one day be unthinkable seriously. It’s essential therefore that reports, briefings and suchlike are always professionally produced.

Estimated cost: £2,500

  1. Parliamentary Event
When making your case to politicians, there can be no substitute for meeting in person to build trust and understanding.

This will often entail hosting events (which incur modest refreshments and travel/accommodation costs) so that key staff and specialist speakers are on hand to answer questions and strengthen working relationships with parliamentarians.

Estimated cost: £4,500

Will you consider giving £10 or £25 or £50 or £100 or £500 or £1,000 or £5,000 or more so SPUC can expand the reach of the pro-life message and save babies’ lives?

Thank you for standing up for the TRUTH and protecting unborn babies and their mothers.

Yours in defence of life,
PS – We will NOT persuade Parliament to end funding for UK abortion while millions are still being sent to support it in countries like China every year, contributing to the annual 73 million abortion killings worldwide.

Likewise, progress combatting abortion coercion here in Britain will NOT be possible until UK politicians recognise it for the scourge on women it is and call for an END to overseas aid funding which is facilitating it.

That’s why I must ask for your help to get involved and support SPUC’s parliamentary work today, if you can.
