Powering the people behind the scenes
Behind the scenes of impactful newsroom projects, programs and stories, you’ll find the planners and coordinators. They help make big decisions without an executive title. They ensure excellence and accountability without formal authority. They connect all the dots without direct reports.
Poynter’s Lead With Influence ([link removed]) training program empowers these informal leaders by helping them build their social capital and grow their impact.
Launched at the end of 2021, this online program now takes place three times a year. More than 100 people – including product, project and program managers, producers, senior editors, and folks in audience, innovation and strategy – graduate from Lead With Influence ([link removed]) annually with more sway and more say.
“I love this program because it’s clearly fulfilling a need we have in the industry,” said Kathy Lu, Poynter adjunct and Lead With Influence ([link removed]) program director. “Though the participants are generally leaders who don’t manage people, they still have to skillfully navigate personal dynamics up, down and across their organizations to be successful. And their success is tied to their organizations’ success.”

How Any Journalist Can Earn Trust
Self-directed course, start any time
We have to stop assuming people understand the mission, ethics and processes behind our work in journalism. We can’t let ourselves get lumped in with perceptions of “the media.” Instead, we need to actively work to earn trust from our communities by telling them why we’re worthy of their time, trust and support.
This online, self-directed course will help you understand mistrust and gain a better understanding of what trust in news looks like around the world. Examples and activities are designed for non-U.S. news media and fact-checking organizations, in collaboration with Poynter’s International Fact-Checking Network. If you are based in the U.S., check out this version ([link removed]) instead.
Cost: Free.
