Friend,
Over the weekend, one of the newspapers in our area, The Roanoke Star News, published an article entitled, "White-Boyd Changes Colors For Election – Suetterlein Is The Best Choice For District 4."
The Senate Democratic Caucus condemned the title and tone of the article, and Councilwoman White-Boyd has received numerous messages of support from district residents. The article's theme seems to be that someone like Councilwoman White-Boyd has to change colors to talk about issues like 'cracking down' on violent crime and parental involvement in education.
The article begins, "Suddenly, Roanoke City Council member and the Democrat candidate for VA Senate District 4, Trish White-Boyd has begun supporting “ tough on crime legislation!”
The article continues, "Roanoke City citizens are definitely familiar with White-Boyd and her inability to find a solution to reduce violent crime in the City."
And, "White-Boyd’s record – or rather lack thereof – in fighting violent crime should be a lesson to be remembered when Roanoke voters go to the polls." Trish White-Boyd has a strong record of fighting violent crime, and she made it a top priority on the Roanoke City Council; -
On Roanoke City Council, Vice-Mayor White-Boyd delivered for law enforcement with an additional "Increase in Public Safety Compensation - $11 million" in Fiscal Years 2022-2024.
-
Working with her Council colleagues and residents, Councilwoman White-Boyd hired a new Chief of Police for the City of Roanoke and together "made it clear that the City needed a Chief of Police with a proven record of community engagement, strong leadership, and crime reduction."
-
"Notable accomplishments during Booth’s tenure as Chief of Police in Danville, Virginia, include transitioning from the highest per capita violent crime rate in 2017 to a 35-year low in all crime in 2020."
-
“I believe that what works is community policing and creating an environment that is reflective of the City of Roanoke,” Booth says. “Focused policing, specifically on violent offenders, and accountability at all levels of the organization is what is needed to reduce crime and build trust.”
The article also takes issue with Trish's support for "Safer communities and fighting the opioid crisis by prosecuting traffickers,” and accuses her of, "just a campaigning propaganda?" |
On parental involvement in education, the article claims, "White-Boyd is maneuvering around with messages hoping to appeal the conservative voters."
And, "For example, while Democrats are opposing parental rights in schools, White-Boyd is nevertheless sending out a different message, ”Parental rights, and a removal of politics from the classroom.” Obviously, this message is targeting conservatives for the purpose of votes only." -
Long before she was elected to City Council, Trish White-Boyd was a parent elected to lead the Parent-Teacher Association. She and her husband were deeply involved in their childrens' upbringing and education. Here is how a teacher described Trish's parental involvement in a letter to the editor years ago, "As a teacher at Ruffner Middle School, I witnessed the president, Trish White-Boyd, re-energize a defunct school PTA. She was committed to the school and found time to meet with teachers and provide activities for the students. Her innovative leadership was contagious as the membership grew and the outlook became a positive one. Energy is a “must have” for Roanoke and Trish has it."
The article concludes, "How can White-Boyd be trusted as she has not spoken in support of parental rights in schools in the past?" |
