Dear John,
Can you imagine a mine underneath a lake that flows directly into the Boundary Waters? Mining company Twin Metals recently submitted a request to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) to undertake exploratory drilling on state land on the shores of Birch Lake in order to pursue this very dangerous idea.
This exploration is solely to advance a sulfide-ore copper mine underneath Birch Lake, the most popular recreation lake in the Superior National Forest outside the Boundary Waters and upstream of the Wilderness.
We need your help to push back on this very dangerous plan, and to fight for state-level protections for the Boundary Waters - will you rush a gift today?
Campaign to Save the Boundary Waters succeeded in our goal of a 20-year copper nickel mining ban on federal lands in the Boundary Waters watershed. We have a companion goal of a ban on state lands, and this exploratory drilling plan is exactly why such a state ban is critical and necessary if we are to save the Boundary Waters.
The Twin Metals project has been rejected at every turn, but as long as they continue to push for copper mining in the Boundary Waters watershed, we need to be there to push right back.
