On Indigenous Peoples’ Day , we honor the history and culture of Native American people including the
preservation of their lands and natural resources. For far too long, greedy
fossil fuel companies have exploited Indigenous communities for profit, like in
the Arctic where increased oil drilling is adversely hurting local native
tribes, wildlife, and the planet.

The Biden Administration has announced new oil and gas drilling rules for two
major regions of the Arctic — Alaska’s National Petroleum Reserve and the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. However, the proposed rules have some serious gaps that would allow for
loopholes that Big Oil and Gas can use for new developments in these locations.

The Administration has also failed to acknowledge the impact on the subsistence
for the local Indigenous Gwich’in people, whose way of life is under threat by
new fossil fuel developments. If we’re going to protect the Arctic from further
fossil fuel destruction we urgently need 5,614 activists like you to speak up today and urge President Biden to STRENGTHEN protections against Arctic drilling — without any loopholes! Friend, can we count on you to add your name by our
petition deadline at 11:59 P.M. tonight?

[[link removed]]The Arctic is on the frontlines of the climate crisis. The region is warming TWICE AS FAST as the rest of the world, and animals like polar bears and caribou are in
serious danger. Alaska’s National Petroleum Reserve is the single largest unit
of public lands in the country, spanning nearly 23 million acres! It serves as a critical habitat for migratory birds, brown bears, threatened
polar bears, walruses, and more.

The survival of vulnerable Arctic species isn’t just critical for biodiversity
and the environment but also for local Indigenous tribes who rely on a healthy Arctic ecosystem for their way of life. Arctic drilling goes against protections listed under National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) — a law that requires federal agencies to assess the environmental
effects of any proposed actions. This includes an evaluation of any related
social and economic impacts on nearby residents, like the Indigenous communities
in the Arctic.

The greedy fossil fuel industry won’t stop destroying the Arctic and threatening
all those who live there unless the government takes bold action. We’re running out of time to turn the pressure up, Friend, so please don’t hesitate. SIGN NOW to tell President Biden to oppose oil and gas development in the
Arctic immediately! >>
