While the GOP engages in political theater and sneaks a greedy $8,000 pay raise for themselves into the budget, everyday families are struggling.

Tell Congress: No pay raise for legislators without a pay raise for parents!

John,

Time is running out. The government narrowly avoided a shutdown after the GOP threatened to hold it hostage, making unreasonable and inconsistent demands to push their extreme MAGA agenda forward—but funding has been extended only to November 17.1 And in case you missed it, GOP members of Congress want to pass a pay raise for themselves—without giving parents one.2

While the GOP engages in political theater and tries to sneak a greedy $8,000 pay raise for themselves into the budget, working and middle-class families are struggling because conservative members of Congress refuse to pass commonsense relief legislation. Now we have 39 days to make sure that members of Congress know: There is no pay raise for them without a pay raise for parents.

Relief to families can’t come soon enough. The costs of essentials like food, shelter, and utilities are rising, and parents are grappling to make ends meet. It’s time for Congress to pass the American Family Act of 2023, giving working and middle-class families a desperately needed $3,600 raise by bringing back the popular and effective Child Tax Credit.

Keep up the pressure and take action to support families NOW! Join more than 45,000 MoveOn members and add your name to the petition demanding that there be no pay raise for Congress unless parents get a pay raise.

Thanks!

Tell House Republicans: No raise for Congress until parents get a raise!

Dear MoveOn member,

As inflation raised the cost of everyday living, and when American families needed it the most, hard-working parents were dealt a cruel blow when Republicans voted to end the monthly Child Tax Credit. The tax credit made it more affordable for parents to start a family or keep their families afloat, and an additional year of the Child Tax Credit was projected to create 500,000 new full-time private-sector jobs.3 It’s proof that investing directly in working- and middle-class families fuels our economy—what’s good for hard-working parents is good for all of us.

But after betraying American families and ending the expanded Child Tax Credit—a $3,600 annual pay raise for parents—House Republicans turned around to give themselves an $8,000 annual pay raise.4

Fortunately, House Democrats have introduced the American Family Act of 2023, which would permanently restore the expanded Child Tax Credit. We can't let this critical relief for families be blocked by greedy politicians who prioritize their own self-interest over the well-being of hard-working families.

Will you sign the petition to demand that House Speaker Kevin McCarthy and House Republicans give families a raise before they greedily vote to line their own pockets?

It’s time to hold Congress accountable. Members of Congress already make $174,000 a year—more than double the average household income in the United States.5 Yet House Republicans shamefully chose to end commonsense tax relief for working- and middle-class families, while moving to give themselves a huge pay raise.

Sign the petition to say no to pay raises for Congress until parents get the pay raise they deserve!

The impact of the Child Tax Credit was undeniable. It provided much-needed relief to working- and middle-class families, and it allowed us to pay for basic needs like food, rent, utilities, and education. Before the Child Tax Credit was ripped away by House Republicans, it lifted 3 million children out of poverty and led to a drastic drop in food insufficiency for families. It was one of the most significant accomplishments of the first year of the Biden administration.6

A few greedy Republicans should not be allowed to block needed relief for our families while giving themselves a pay raise. Sign the petition and demand Congress give parents a $3,600 pay raise by reinstating the expanded Child Tax Credit through the American Families Act of 2023 before they vote to give themselves an $8,000 raise.

Together, we can send a strong message to Congress and tell House Republicans that we expect and demand that they put our families first!

Thanks for all you do.

Want to support MoveOn's work? Book bans have skyrocketed thanks to right-wing state laws which have forced teachers to remove books from their classrooms. In response, MoveOn is launching a "Banned Bookmobile," filling it with books that the far right has banned, and driving it around to hand out those books, for free, in highly trafficked areas that will attract media attention. To keep the Banned Bookmobile up and running into 2024, we need your help.
