Today, we recognize Indigenous Peoples' Day in New Mexico. It’s past time that we also honor our nation’s Tribes and Pueblos on the federal level. That’s why I’ve brought forward legislation to make Indigenous Peoples' Day a federal holiday.
We need to stop commemorating Columbus Day and the violence it represents. Instead, we should establish a federal holiday that lifts up the incredible strength and resilience of America's Tribal Nations. Making Indigenous Peoples' Day an official federal holiday is an important step in addressing the inequity and harm the United States has caused Tribes and Pueblos, honoring their rich cultures and traditions, and supporting Tribal sovereignty.
Thank you for taking the time today to speak up in support of our country’s Tribal Nations. — Martin |
