Hi,
[link removed] probably don't have to tell you that textbook prices are scary - we both know that they are, from overpriced hard-copy new editions to expensive access codes with looming expiration dates. It doesn't have to be this way.
Send our faculty statement of support to your professors with this sample email! ([link removed])
Open textbooks are just like traditional textbooks except that the authors publish them under an open copyright license. These open textbooks and educational materials provide an exciting alternative to traditional books, saving students money and improving student success and retention.
Open textbooks are already in use, saving students millions of dollars in textbooks costs every year. But we need to to do more to make sure our professors know about open textbooks. and consider making the switch.
When you forward our faculty statement of support ([link removed]) and ask them to sign it, you are helping to educate faculty on open textbooks, helping to get free textbooks assigned in their classes, and helping to demonstrate to the campus administration and elected officials that the cost of textbooks is an issue worth taking action on. Want to learn more? Here's our Open Textbooks FAQ ([link removed]) .
Ask your professors to sign our textbooks affordabiliy statement of support now! ([link removed])
Want to do more to help us tackle the terrible cost of course materials?
Here are three other ways you can take action to make textbooks affordable:
* Sign our petition ([link removed]) and tell us your textbook horror story: Showing student support for open textbooks is critical. When signing, you can share your story with us that we can use to help faculty, administrator, and legislators know how this issue is affecting students.
* Attend our training on how to get published in your local paper: We're running a training on writing and submitting a letter-to-the-editor to you local newspapers on the topic of affordable textbooks. The training is tomorrow, Tuesday October 10th at 7pm ET / 4pm PT. Here's the Google Hangout Link ([link removed])
* Talk to your student government: Student governments can make an impact by calling on the university to fund open textbooks programs. Here's a sample resolution for SGAs. ([link removed])
Thanks for taking action!
Liam
