On this Indigenous Peoples’ Day, I encourage all Marylanders to join me in
reflecting on the resilience, strength, and enduring cultural legacy of
Indigenous Americans, who have contributed enormously to our rich national
tapestry.

Part of honoring Indigenous Peoples' Day is addressing the history behind
it; the deep wounds, grave injustices, and generational pain our nation
inflicted on Indigenous communities.

That’s not an easy task. But confronting our history with clarity and
compassion is the only path forward.

That’s why we must teach the next generation of leaders about the
injustices and indelible contributions made by Indigenous peoples to this
country.

We must elect leaders who respect the sovereignty of Indigenous nations,
and ensure that Indigenous people enjoy the same opportunities, services,
and standard of living as all Americans.

We must ensure that Indigenous communities are actually heard by
policymakers, and that real action is taken to address the unique and
complex problems they face.

Today and every day, I'm committed to uplifting the health, well-being,
and prosperity of our Indigenous neighbors. I hope you’ll join me in this
endeavor.

Happy Indigenous Peoples' Day,
Angela Alsobrooks
