The videos and images out of Israel are harrowing, the fear in the voices of my Israeli family and friends is heartbreaking, and the prospects for peace have become devastatingly grim.
I stand with Israel in its right to defend itself today and always. Hamas' barbarism must be put to an end. At this very moment, sirens are blaring, rockets are soaring towards civilian neighborhoods, and the Israeli people are battling for their lives and the livelihood of the Jewish state.
Like many people in our district, I have strong ties to Israel. My grandmother served in the Israeli military when the young state was fighting for its very survival and she always reminded us that, as Jews, we always had a safe place to call home in Israel.
Now, after Hamas launched the deadliest terrorist attack in decades, we find ourselves battling for survival yet again.
The Israeli Defense Force’s motto is “Akharai”, meaning “Follow me.” Now more than ever, America must stand beside our Israeli brothers and sisters by loudly condemning Hamas and supporting them every way we can in their fight to defend their home.
There is no justification for their heinous extremism and Israel needs to know that we are fully behind them. My heart breaks for those who have lost someone dear to them or who are worried about the safety of their friends and family abroad. Here in New York, I know many of you are on edge, sick with worry, and praying for peace. I pray with you and hope we see brighter days soon.
In prayer,
Zak Malamed
