In case you missed it, a team of researchers from MIT’s Election Data and Science Lab published a report in the Washington Post last week, debunking the myth that Evo Morales, Bolivia’s ousted leader, committed election fraud.

Incumbent Rep. Eliot Engel, who serves as the Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, has backed this coup since it took place in November. In his own words then: “I commend the Organization of American States (OAS) for its thorough audit of the country’s flawed presidential election and its call for new elections. Moving forward, I urge an expeditious, transparent, and vastly improved electoral process. The OAS role in ensuring a level playing field in Bolivia’s upcoming election is more important now than it ever has been before.”

It is impossible to reconcile Rep. Engel’s statement with the conclusions of the MIT researchers: “There is not any statistical evidence of fraud that we can find...All in all, the OAS’s statistical analysis and conclusions would appear deeply flawed.” Moreover, “relying on unverified tests as a proof of fraud is a serious threat to any democracy.”

With Super Tuesday coming up tomorrow, we know the stakes are high for the Democratic Party and for voters across the country. But as long as we have leaders like Rep. Engel, how can we be sure that democracy and the will of the people (at home or abroad) will be respected? Over his thirty years in Congress, Rep. Engel has propagated falsehoods to justify the interests of US hegemony. It was wrong with Iraq, and it’s wrong now.
