Celebrate Columbus Day

Columbus Day is observed on the second Monday in October and commemorates the landing of Christopher Columbus in the “New World” on October 12, 1492.

For over 500 years Columbus was remembered in America with books, poems, and statues. Praise for Columbus and his accomplishments echoed throughout the nation. (For example, President Dwight Eisenhower said:

The memory of Christopher Columbus, a common heritage of the Old and New World, is...a source of inspiration to all who, under God, would search the unknown and advance the frontiers of human knowledge for the betterment of mankind. Out of courage, perseverance in purpose and unshakable confidence in his principles, he fashioned a new age in human history.)

With his incredible legacy spanning several centuries, it comes as a shock to discover that Columbus has become public enemy number one. Every year more and more communities destroy their monuments and rebaptize Columbus Day as Indigenous People’s Day. Each year, revisionists bring out more and wilder accusations in attempts to rewrite the history books in the name of equity and inclusion.

Columbus did have faults; but he also made indispensable positive contributions to America and the world. He deserves to be honored, not because he was perfect but for his vision and courage.
