Friend,
"At a ceremony held Dec. 19, 2022, in Henrietta Lacks Plaza, during which Bryce Cobbs’ drawings of Lacks were revealed, White-Boyd, who was then the city’s vice mayor, thanked her fellow council members for the vote that changed the plaza’s name.
White-Boyd led the drive for the entire project, both the “Hidden Histories” documentary and the Lacks statue. She’d been hearing about Henrietta Lacks’ story for years. “A lot of us have always had a lot of respect for her and her story, that history,” she said. “When I got on council, that was the one of the things that I was determined to do.”
It began with a handful of people talking over coffee about raising money for the statue, with “no idea that it would happen in less than a year. It took off like wildfire , because people really wanted to see that happen,” she said." - Cardinal News [[link removed]]
Civil rights attorney Ben Crump [[link removed]] spoke about Lacks' legacy as the “the Mother of Modern Medicine” at the unveiling, as did members of the Lacks family.
We want to thank everyone who supported the Henrietta Lacks Statue [[link removed]] that was unveiled this week in Roanoke City. We would also encourage you to visit Roanoke's Harrison Museum of African American Culture and learn more about the Hidden In Plain Site [[link removed]] documentary.

"Lacks was born in Roanoke in 1920 and lived here as a small child before moving to Clover, Virginia, and eventually to Maryland. In 1951, Lacks, a Black woman, was treated for cervical cancer at Baltimore’s Johns Hopkins Hospital. Some of her cancer cells were extracted for use in research without her knowledge or consent. At the time, there were no federal regulations or restrictions on the use of patients’ cells in research.
Lacks died the following year, but her cells were unique in their ability to continuously grow and divide in the laboratory. Now called the “HeLa” cell line after the first two letters of her first and last names, the “immortal” cells have helped enable some of the most important advances in biomedical research.
Between 1953 and 2018, more than 110,000 scientific publications cited the use of HeLa cells, including, in three instances, Nobel Prize winning research, according to the National Institutes of Health." - Virginia Tech News [[link removed]]
