Today marks one month until Virginia votes in an election that will decide the future of reproductive rights for millions of Virginia women.
We'll explain why in just a moment, but if you don't have the time to read — will you pitch in anything you can right now to help our Virginia Newsroom Dogwood reach voters with critical information in the run-up to Election Day?
Incredibly, Virginia is the last southern state without a post-Roe abortion ban. Republican Gov. Glenn Youngkin has vowed to change that if Republicans retake control of the General Assembly.
With slim majorities and every seat in the State Legislature up for grabs, Youngkin could get his way, despite polling that shows Virginians support keeping abortion access legal.
With early voting underway in Virginia, our Dogwood is already reporting critical updates about election news, deadlines, and what’s at stake in the election.👇
With your support, Dogwood’s coverage can have the same kind of positive impact we saw our reporting have in Michigan’s fight for reproductive freedom.
After the Supreme Court overturned Roe, our Michigan newsroom, The Gander surveyed Michiganders views on abortion. Then, in an experiment, we exposed some of these same folks to previous Gander coverage of the state’s controversial 1931 abortion ban. After seeing our reporting, we resent the same survey to see if people’s views had changed.
The results spoke for themselves, John.
Those who read our local coverage were more likely to oppose criminalizing abortion by 5 points.
Consequently, voters turned out in droves to enshrine reproductive rights into the state constitution.
This work is only made possible with your generous support. So if you can, please pitch in anything you can today to power our innovative journalism.
