While there have been positive steps toward reform, we are concerned that the recent recommendation to reclassify marijuana as a Schedule III drug doesn't go far enough to address the social and racial justice issues caused by the criminalization of cannabis.
Rescheduling marijuana, as proposed, still maintains federal criminal penalties for possession, even in states with legal adult-use and medical cannabis laws. This falls short of President Biden's commitment to decriminalize marijuana, a promise he made during his 2020 presidential campaign.
To truly address the injustices associated with cannabis criminalization, we urge President Biden to go beyond rescheduling and completely remove marijuana from the Controlled Substances Act. This would be a crucial step towards ending the criminalization of countless individuals and communities, expunging records, and providing a path to social and racial equity.
