At its core, impeachment is a tool to hold government officials accountable for egregious wrongdoing. For each of Donald Trump’s impeachments, for example, there was overwhelming evidence of serious charges: attempting to coerce Ukraine into interfering with the 2020 presidential election and inciting an insurrection when he lost that same election.

But now, MAGA Republicans are using impeachment as a battering ram against democracy on the federal and state levels. They’re pointing fingers without evidence, sowing doubt and distrust in order to overturn the will of voters when they don’t like their choices. 

It’s happening right now in Wisconsin. Despite record-breaking numbers of Wisconsinites overwhelmingly voting to elect Janet Protasiewicz to the state Supreme Court, radical state Republicans are ready to impeach her before she’s even heard a case. In fact, they’ve been threatening to impeach her before she was even elected!

Let’s rewind for a second: even before the election in Wisconsin, MAGA Republicans were so threatened by the mere possibility of a progressive majority on the state Supreme Court, they had a contingency plan in place. They were terrified she might vote against the gerrymandered maps that keep them in power, or strike down Wisconsin’s abortion ban.

They planned to oust Janet should she be elected—and she was elected, fair and square. 

This type of underhanded play isn’t isolated to one state government, either. It’s a widespread move ever since Trump’s attempt to overturn the 2020 election. In Washington D.C., MAGA Republicans are running a sham impeachment inquiry into President Biden, wasting countless hours they could otherwise spend addressing the issues their constituents care about.

What happens in Wisconsin matters for the health of our nation’s democracy. We can’t allow MAGA extremists to undermine the choice of voters just because they don’t like the results. An attack on one state’s democracy is an attack on us all.
