As winter looms, Ukraine braces for the worst.

Last month here in Ukraine, a series of airstrikes targeting civilian infrastructure
bombarded energy facilities. The damage caused blackouts in several regions across
west and central Ukraine.

The recent attacks mark the beginning of a tough winter ahead. Attacks last year
damaged more than 50 percent of the country’s energy infrastructure, plunging much
of Ukraine into darkness for extended periods of time and leaving millions of people
without heat and running water amid frigid temperatures.

This fall, as temperatures drop and humanitarian needs increase, Mercy Corps is
working with local teams, delivering aid and ramping up our work.

Last winter, a Mercy Corps partner in Kyiv provided cash aid, essential supplies,
and support to more than 200,000 people.


An estimated 18 million people in Ukraine require humanitarian assistance and, more
than a year and a half after the full-scale invasion of Ukraine began, nearly 5.1
million people remain displaced internally.

Winter conditions are likely to intensify the need as the cost of living increases
in the winter months. Families will need proper shelter, heat, food, and clean
water.

Mercy Corps and our local partners are continuing to deliver aid in Ukraine and to
refugees in Poland and Moldova. To date, we’ve reached nearly 750,000 people.

We’re delivering essential supplies to areas in dire need, even in the midst of
intense conflict. Our urgent relief efforts include vital items like food, hygiene
products, bedding, and shelter kits. Plus, we’re also providing much-needed cash
assistance to displaced individuals, so they can purchase the necessities they
require.

Working alongside our trusted partners, we’ve successfully evacuated tens of
thousands of people to safety, providing transportation along humanitarian corridors
to ensure they receive crucial aid upon arrival.
