ABC 7 Defense Moves To Delay Sentencing For ‘Hollywood Ripper’ Sentencing for a man convicted of two murders dubbed the "Hollywood Ripper," was delayed Friday over a defense motion that seeks a new trial because the prosecution failed to share information that would have compromised the credibility of a detective who was a key witness in the case. A jury recommended the death penalty for 44-year-old Michael Thomas Gargiulo, who was found guilty in August of the home-invasion murders of two women, one of whom was about to go on a date with actor Ashton Kutcher. But sentencing has been delayed indefinitely while Judge Larry P. Fidler considers a defense motion that came after revelations in a Los Angeles Times story that retired sheriff's Detective Mark Lillienfeld, a former investigator on Gargiulo's case, had posed as a deputy in 2018 and smuggled contraband into a county jail while working as a district attorney's investigator. The violation was unrelated to Gargiulo's case, but his defense attorneys assert that the prosecution was required by law to disclose it to the defense so they could use it to attack his credibility as a witness and detective during the trial. NBC 4 Robert Durst’s Reality-TV Show Of A Life Plays Out In Long-Awaited Murder Trial Next Week After decades of evading law enforcement over his suspected involvement in two alleged murders, New York real estate scion Robert Durst will now face a Los Angeles County jury following his participation in a TV documentary in which prosecutors say he implicated himself. Interviews conducted for the six-part HBO documentary series, “The Jinx: The Life and Deaths of Robert Durst,” will play a role in the trial expected to start Wednesday, where Durst, 76, stands accused of murdering his best friend, Susan Berman, in her Beverly Hills home in 2000. The following is an in-depth look at the complicated story of how Durst went from an heir to a real estate empire to an inmate in Twin Towers Correctional facility in downtown Los Angeles. In addition to Berman’s killing, for nearly 40 years Durst has been suspected of being involved in the 1982 disappearance of his wife, Kathleen Durst, in New York. County’s Temporary Homeless Shelter Opens Today, March 2, In San Pedro A temporary shelter for San Pedro’s homeless population will open on Monday, March 2, offering 40 beds in a vacant Los Angeles County building on the corner of Eighth and Beacon streets, where an encampment has burgeoned in recent years. As of this week, many of the tents were gone from those immediate blocks as the city of Los Angeles has conducted more frequent cleanups. Police also have made recent arrests in the area. The county shelter was put on a fast track and will open before the city’s “Bridge Home” project about a mile away. The latter has been in the works for about two years and will house 100 folks when it opens, tentatively scheduled to happen within the next few months. The unsuccessful effort to clear San Pedro’s sidewalks over the past five years has pushed the community’s frustration levels. Some opposed the shelters, but county and city leaders pressed forward — saying some kind of solution was needed.
