Dear  john,

A lot has happened in the House of Representatives in the past couple weeks. It’s been a historic fall here in Washington, to say the least, so let’s dive into the state of play and how we wound up here.

Last Saturday afternoon, then-Speaker Kevin McCarthy brought forward and passed a Continuing Resolution (CR) to fund government through November 17th that only the uniparty could dream up.

More Democrats than Republicans voted for the bill, which continues the Biden-Pelosi spending levels and policies from the detestable December omnibus that all but a handful of Republicans opposed. This CR represented a capitulation to the status quo forces in Washington and a continuation of the same old dysfunction.

HOW WE GOT THERE...

I’ve fought all year for the House to take up and pass conservative, single-subject appropriations bills that allow us to evaluate government programs line-by-line, instead of bundling corrupt swamp spending into an end-of-year “must-pass” omnibus.

In furtherance of that goal, I helped lead a group of dedicated conservatives in holding up floor action and the passage of any CR until we honored that promise to consider and pass each those of appropriations bills.

In fact, last week, we took up four of these bills, and passed three of them with strong, conservative policies – I voted for all these bills. I also voted against a stand-alone bill to send $300 million to Ukraine. A majority of the Republican conference opposed this bill, which was an important moment in the fight for a sane and responsible U.S, foreign policy.

Unfortunately, then-Speaker McCarthy wasted six weeks – sending Members home for the traditional August (and September) recess, weeks that should have been used to consider the remaining spending bills. When it quickly became clear that leadership set up a scenario where we would need to pass a CR or shut down the government, the uniparty group decided to instead pass Saturday’s CR, keeping spending levels the same until it runs out next month. I could not join in this circus, joining 90 of my colleagues in voting NO.

I will continue to fight for the House to pass all twelve individual spending bills to avoid another monstrous omnibus. The status quo is unacceptable, and we must break these terrible swamp habits.

MOTION TO VACATE...

Following the Saturday CR vote, my colleague Rep. Matt Gaetz announced his intentions to bring a Motion to Vacate the chair against then-Speaker McCarthy.

In an historic vote, eight Republican Members voted to remove McCarthy from the Speaker’s office, the first time in US History.

I voted against the motion to vacate. You can see my reasoning here –

I elaborated on this decision yesterday in an interview with Pete Kaliner on WBT radio:

Now that McCarthy is gone, the House must select a new Speaker. I want to let you know that this morning, I endorsed Congressman Jim Jordan for the position. I’ve worked closely with Rep. Jordan throughout my time in Congress, and I know that he is the right man for the job.

You can read my full statement on my endorsement here.

As the election for the next Speaker unfolds, I will make sure to keep you updated on that race along with the ongoing funding battle, Biden impeachment inquiry, and the House’s response to the nationwide crime crisis.
