BY NASRIN SOTOUDEH | Nasrin Sotoudeh is an Iranian human rights lawyer who has spent her career fighting for the rights of women and minorities in the Middle East. For her important work, Sotoudeh has been honored with copious awards and designations, including the U.S. State Department’s Global Human Rights Defender title and Ms. magazine’s Top Feminist award. Just this month, she is the sole recipient of both The Civil Courage Prize, which honors individuals who show courage against evil and oppression, and the Brown Democracy Medal from the McCourtney Institute for Democracy, marking the award’s 10th year.
“The monster of oppression has nested in one corner of the world,” wrote Sotoudeh in her new book, Women, Life, Freedom: Our Fight for Human Rights and Equality in Iran . “It dreams of taking over the world. We must overcome our fears, stand up to the beast, and look it in the eyes.”

BY NARGES MOHAMMADI | It’s been one year since Mahsa Amini’s death while in custody of the Iranian Guidance Patrol, launching a renewed feminist uprising in Iran. Just this week, Iranian human and women’s rights campaigner Narges Mohammadi has received the Nobel Peace Prize [[link removed]] “for her fight against the oppression of women in Iran and her fight to promote human rights and freedom for all.”
"In awarding her this year’s Nobel Peace Prize, the Norwegian Nobel Committee wishes to honour her courageous fight for human rights, freedom, and democracy in Iran,” according to the Nobel Prize announcement. “This year’s Peace Prize also recognises the hundreds of thousands of people who, in the preceding year, have demonstrated against the theocratic regime’s policies of discrimination and oppression targeting women.”
Shortly after Mohammadi authored this article in 2021 (the first she has written in English) calling for the end of “white torture”—a form of solitary confinement used in Iranian prisons—she was arrested. She currently remains in prison.
