Hi John,
Governor Cuomo's fighting for a budget that would severely shortchange our public schools. But the Governor cannot pass a budget alone.
Next week, New York State legislators will release their state budget proposals. Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins and Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie will ultimately join the Governor in making the final decisions in the enacted budget — and right now, they are deciding what to bring to the table.
We have one week left to influence their decisions, and ensure that the New York State Assembly and Senate budget proposals put our children's futures first. Email Senate Majority Leader Stewart-Cousins and Speaker Heastie now to tell them to pass equitable taxation of the ultra-rich and fully fund Foundation Aid in their one house budget proposals.
New York has enormous wealth, but we also have one of the worst track-records for inequity in the nation for funding for our public schools. Every year, our children are told there isn't enough money in the state budget for their education. While the richest New Yorkers hoard their wealth, schools have been forced to stretch every dollar and pick and choose between offering art or music, social supports or after school programs.
Enough is enough. We need to make sure that Senate Majority Leader Stewart-Cousins and Speaker Heastie know that education funding must be a top priority in their budget proposals. Email now to demand they fight for equitable taxation of the ultra-rich and fully fund Foundation Aid in the budget.
In solidarity,
