Rep. Andy Kim newsletter banner image

Greetings,

We hope you have had a great week! Congressman Kim worked in a bipartisan way to prevent a government shutdown late last week. He then returned to New Jersey after the Republican Speaker of the House, Kevin McCarthy, was removed from office for the first time in history.

At this moment, the U.S. House of Representatives stands in recess with only an “Acting Speaker” in place for the purposes of electing a Speaker. The House is incapable of considering legislation and meeting its constitutional responsibilities right now because of extreme hyperpartisanship. This is not only a national embarrassment, it’s outrageous and unacceptable. There are national security implications, as well as concerns about the basic function of government. Congressman Kim is eager to restore trust in government and find common sense solutions.

Important Notes on the Speakership Vote

On October 2nd, Congressman Matt Gaetz (FL-01) introduced a motion to vacate the chair of the Speaker of the House.

A motion to vacate is filed by one member of the House of Representatives, but requires the support of the majority of the chamber to carry out. In American history it was never successful until Tuesday.

Congressman Kim stands firm in his belief that we need to avoid chaos and work together to meet the moment and solve our biggest challenges. In order to be able to serve you, we need to have a Speaker of the House. Right now, hyperpartisanship and extreme, ideological politics are preventing Congress from performing its basic functions and duties on your behalf.

We can and should never accept this chaos as normal. Despite what is happening in Washington and the political musical chairs being played within the Republican Conference, our office stands firm in our duty to assist and serve you every single day.
