Structural Inequities in Indigenous Health Policy Funding
In their article in the October issue of Health Affairs, Arielle Deutsch and coauthors examine ways that health policy funding drives health disparities experienced by Indigenous people in the US.
Their study specifically examines Indigenous-led community-based organizations (ICBOs) that provide psychosocial care, and the funding models that these organizations depend upon.
Through discussions with community members, the authors identify six key policies that funding institutions use to allocate funds to ICBOs, and related challenges with these funding policies.
Deutsch and coauthors note that ultimately, “funding policies for the grants that ICBOs attain are incompatible with their needs to thrive.”
These funding traps can make it difficult for ICBOs to justify certain expenditures that are critical to Indigenous psychosocial care, create certain burdens on ICBOs, and hinder access to comprehensive care, among other challenges.
Health Affairs' Jessica Bylander and Ellen Bayer explore the new October issue focusing on Structural Racism In Health. Their conversation provides insight into unique online features exclusive to this issue as well as highlighting a number of the journal articles featured.
