Earlier this week, Kevin McCarthy became the first speaker of the House in our nation's history to be ousted from the seat. House Democrats acted decisively to vote out a leader who abandoned his values and caved to extremists who dishonor our democracy.

As a trauma surgeon, I teach my trainees that every second counts during a crisis to take action and save lives. As an Air Force veteran who values our democracy, I am disappointed that Kevin McCarthy spent his short time as speaker dividing our nation and pointing blame everywhere except at his party’s bad policies for the suffering of the American people. He had the opportunity to create positive change and uplift our communities safer — and he failed.

One thing is clear: We need bold leaders in Congress with the courage to stand up to powerful interests in Washington to save lives; not imperiling our livelihood playing political games.

My campaign is about taking action. The gun violence epidemic, the unjust American healthcare system, reproductive freedom, the climate crisis, protecting our democracy; these issues demand relentless attention — and I’m answering the call to serve.
