Dear A.,
October 6th, 1973 — 50 years ago today. Israelis are gathered for Yom Kippur services, fasting and praying, reflecting and atoning.
Suddenly, without warning, sirens blare.
Arab armies from Egypt and Syria have launched a coordinated surprise attack, crossing into the Sinai and Golan Heights, quickly overrunning Israeli defensive positions.
Israel's citizen-soldiers are being called up and mobilized, traveling from their homes to the frontlines.
The fighting is fierce, and Israel takes heavy casualties from the much larger and better-equipped Arab armies — aided and supplied by the Soviets. The odds are long for the Jewish state.
In Sinai, 100,000 Egyptian soldiers and 1,350 tanks face off against only 450 Israeli soldiers and 290 tanks.
In the Golan, 28,000 Syrian troops and 800 tanks confront just 3,000 Israeli troops with 180 tanks.
After only 25 years of independence, the Jewish people seem close to once again losing their homeland.
As AIPAC founder and then-Chairman Si Kenen testified to a congressional subcommittee shortly after the war:
"If the United States had faltered and delayed and if the people of Israel had not received the needed equipment in time, we might have witnessed a catastrophe... This was a war for the liquidation of the Jewish state."
But just as all hope seemed lost, President Nixon issued a powerful order: “Send everything that can fly.”
American planes carrying vital military equipment to the Jewish state took to the skies, resupplying the Israelis with 22,325 tons of weapons and supplies — enabling Israel to turn the tide of the war and defeat the invading armies.
Fifty years ago, Israel was pushed to the brink of survival. Today, it is our responsibility to ensure the Jewish state always has what it needs to defend itself, by itself — never again allowing its existence to hang in the balance.
Thank you for your continued support for our mission to help keep Israel safe and the U.S.-Israel relationship strong.

Iran's Aggression Continues to Escalate
Iran is now exporting 2 million barrels of oil per day, primarily to China, in direct violation of U.S. sanctions. These sales are worth around $150 million per day, which the regime uses to fund attacks against Americans and Israelis and brutally oppress its own people.
